Why pores look large

Pore size is partly a matter of predisposition. Pores become visible above all when they are filled with sebum and dead skin cells. In contact with air this plug oxidises and turns dark: these are blackheads. Over the years the skin also loses firmness, which makes pores look larger. Oily skin, sun and heavy skincare products intensify the effect.

What we do at La Finesse

The HydraFacial® is our first recommendation: after cleansing and a gentle exfoliation, the device gently extracts sebum and blackheads from the pores, followed by hydrating serums. If there are many stubborn blackheads, we extract them by hand during the classic facial. If you would also like to refine your skin texture, you can combine this with microneedling (GlowSolution Reverse Needling).

What you can do yourself

Remove make-up and cleanse thoroughly in the evening. Use a mild exfoliant once or twice a week instead of scrubbing every day. Use light, non-comedogenic skincare. Do not squeeze pores with your fingers: this widens them and can trigger inflammation. Daily sun protection helps the skin keep its firmness.

To be honest

Pores cannot be made to disappear. Clean pores and firmer skin texture do, however, make them look noticeably finer.

Can enlarged pores be made smaller?

Pore size is partly innate and cannot be changed permanently. Thoroughly cleansed pores and firmer skin texture do, however, make them look visibly finer. This is exactly what the HydraFacial® and microneedling aim for.

What is the difference between blackheads and spots?

A blackhead is a pore clogged with sebum and skin cells that is not inflamed. If it is open, the sebum oxidises and turns dark (blackhead); if it is closed, it stays light (whitehead). A spot develops when a blackhead becomes inflamed. If you have many spots, read more under acne and blemished skin.

Which treatment suits blackheads?

The HydraFacial® gently extracts blackheads from the pores without squeezing. For very firm blackheads, we additionally extract by hand during the classic facial. We see which method suits you better in the skin analysis.

Does extraction hurt?

With the HydraFacial®, most people only feel a light suction. Manual extraction can be briefly uncomfortable on sensitive areas such as the nose. We work carefully and take breaks if you wish.

How long do the pores stay clean?

The skin constantly produces new sebum. After a few weeks the pores fill up again. That is why, for oily skin, we recommend a treatment about every four weeks along with suitable skincare at home.

Do pore strips from the chemist help?

They pull out the top layer but do not cleanse deeply and can irritate the skin. They are fine now and then, but they do not replace professional cleansing.

What can I do at home about enlarged pores?

Cleanse thoroughly in the evening, exfoliate gently once or twice a week, use light skincare and apply sun protection every day. We discuss which products suit your skin type during the treatment.
