Acne and blemished skin: what makes a real difference
What is behind it?
Blemished skin develops when the sebaceous glands produce a lot of sebum and dead skin cells clog the pores. Blackheads form; if bacteria settle in them, they become inflamed and turn into spots. Hormones, stress, the wrong skincare, make-up, friction (for example from face masks or your phone) and predisposition all play a part. Acne is far from affecting only teenagers: many women only develop blemishes on the chin and jaw from the age of 25.
What we do at La Finesse
First we analyse your skin. After that we usually recommend one of these treatments: the HydraFacial® cleanses, gently exfoliates, extracts blackheads from the pores and hydrates the skin; for young people up to 21 there is a dedicated acne version. In the classic facial we thoroughly extract the skin by hand and work with products from iS Clinical. If the skin is calm and the focus is on skin texture, microneedling with GlowSolution Reverse Needling can be a useful addition.
What you can do yourself
Cleanse gently morning and evening, not too aggressively. Use light, non-comedogenic skincare. Do not squeeze spots: this spreads bacteria and can leave scars. Clean pillowcases and your phone regularly. Use sun protection every day, because irritated skin develops marks more quickly.
When to see a dermatologist?
If there are many deep, painful inflammations, nodules or cysts, if scars are forming or if the skin does not improve despite good care, acne belongs in the hands of a doctor. A cosmetic treatment can accompany treatment by a doctor; please mention this to us.

Acne and blemished skin in Bern: your questions, our answers
Can acne be cared for cosmetically?
Mild to moderate blemishes can be accompanied well with cosmetic care: we cleanse the pores, remove blackheads, calm the skin and adjust your skincare. Severe, inflammatory acne with nodules or cysts should first be seen by a dermatologist. A cosmetic treatment can be a useful complement to treatment by a doctor.
Which treatment do you recommend for blemished skin?
Usually the HydraFacial®: it cleanses, gently exfoliates, extracts impurities from the pores and hydrates the skin, without downtime. If a lot of extraction is needed, we recommend the classic facial with manual extraction. We clarify what suits your skin in the skin analysis.
Is there an acne treatment for teenagers?
Yes. For teenagers and young adults up to 21 we offer a HydraFacial® specifically for acne (currently CHF 150, around 45 minutes).
I am over 25 and suddenly have spots. Is that normal?
Yes, this is common. Many women only develop blemishes as adults, often on the chin, jaw and neck. Hormones, stress and skincare products play a role. We care for adult skin in the same way and pay particular attention to your skincare at home.
How many treatments do I need?
Blemished skin needs continuity. Many start with a treatment every three to four weeks and extend the interval once the skin is calmer. We set the rhythm together after the skin analysis. Results vary from person to person.
Should I squeeze spots myself?
Better not. Squeezing often pushes bacteria deeper into the skin. This can lead to stronger inflammation, marks and scars. Professional extraction is hygienic and uses the right technique.
Can I wear make-up when I have spots?
After the treatment we give you specific skincare advice. As a general rule: prefer light, non-comedogenic products and always remove make-up thoroughly in the evening.
Does acne leave scars, and can anything be done?
Inflamed or squeezed spots in particular can leave scars or dark marks. Once the acne has settled, we clarify in the skin analysis what makes sense cosmetically. Sunken scars belong in dermatology. More on this under acne scars.
When should I see a dermatologist?
With deep, painful inflammation, nodules or cysts, if scars are forming, if acne suddenly becomes severe or if nothing improves despite good care. If you take medication for acne (for example isotretinoin), we also need to know before every treatment.
What helps against blemished skin at home?
Helpful: cleanse gently morning and evening, use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser, do not squeeze spots, clean pillowcases and phone regularly, use sunscreen daily and remove make-up thoroughly in the evening. At La Finesse you receive a care plan for home.
I am taking isotretinoin. Is a treatment possible?
Please tell us about acne medication such as isotretinoin before every treatment. Microneedling is only possible after a break recommended by your doctor, so please clarify this with them.
Do you also treat men with blemished skin?
Yes. Men often come because of large pores, blemished skin or shaving irritation. The treatment is adapted to their skin.
